La frase viene del guión teatral "El vicario: una tragedia cristiana"; en inglés: «When the missionaries arrived, the Africans had the land and the missionaries had the Bible. They taught us how to pray with our eyes closed. When we opened them, they had the land and we had the Bible». ("The Deputy, a Christian tragedy" (1964), Grove Press, p. 144. El guión fue escrito por el polémico Rolf Hochhuth en dicha obra que resultó ficticia y controversial.
