We need to see religions in terms of broad historical processes as part of the complex macro forces that form human communities into what they are. The history of religions is closely connected with the history of political institutions and the history of economics. To understand this level we need both narrative history and macro historical and sociological analysis. But religions must also be understood through micro studies of particular traditions and texts, for which we need philology in establishing texts and fieldwork of particular practices and societies.
