Ethiopia suffered invasion and immense loss of life and destruction in 1977, not because the United States abandoned it but because the Soviet Union recklessly armed Somalia in the years before, and because Mengistu miscalculated in his gamble on the Soviets. As the Soviet Union struggled to preserve its stake in Somalia while establishing its position in Ethiopia, it at first continued to supply arms to its old client while evidently slowing - or certainly not hastening to make - deliveries to its new one.
