The entire region from North Africa – where Morocco was involved in the Western Sahara war – to the Indian subcontinent formed an 'arch of instability'. The Arab-Israeli conflict, the Indo-Pakistani confrontation over Kashmir and the Afghanistan-Pakistan dispute over Pushtunistan were only the most important minefields that threatened the region.
