Independence for Eritrea is a chimera. It would be a catastrophe for all concerned, Eritreans, Ethiopians and the peoples of neighboring countries. An independent Eritrea could not be self-sustaining, particularly if, as would seem unavoidable, it were cut off from its Ethiopian hinterland. It would be a pawn in the hands of whatever foreign power or powers cared to underwrite it with arms and money. It would never know peace because no Ethiopian government of any political stripe would ever come to terms with its independence. (it) |
