The Crisis No. I from The American Crisis by Thomas Paine was printed in the Pennsylvania Journal on December 19, 1776. Within a day of its publication, General Washington ordered it be read to his dispirited and suffering troops before his crossing of the Delaware River. Its opening sentence These are the times that try men's souls was adopted as the watchword of the Battle of Trenton on December 26 and is believed to have inspired much of the courage which won that victory.
