qkg:contextText The decade that followed the Shah's departure from Iran was one of untold sufferings for the Iranian people. During that period more than a million people were killed in urban guerrilla operations, by firing squads, in prison under torture and, above all, during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war. This means that every hour of rule by the mullahs cost the lives of at least ten iranians. In nearly 38 years of the Shah's reign, a total of 312 people were executed – many of them for murder. In the decade that followed the Shah's fall the number of Iranians executed by the new regime rose to more than 12,000 according to Amnesty International. In the same period the number of political prisoners, which had never exceeded 4000 under the Shah, rose to more than 55,000 according to the lowest estimates. (p. 329) (it)
