Elle aurait dû être un homme, un grand navigateur. Sa raison puissante aurait déduit de nouvelles sphères de découverte à partir de notre savoir sur les anciennes ; et sa volonté forte et impérieuse n'aurait jamais été entamée par l'adversité ou la difficulté, n'aurait jamais renoncé jusqu'à sa mort. Elle avait la tête faite pour la logique, et une capacité d'argumentation inhabituelle chez un homme et plus rare encore certes chez une femme... Une limite à ce don était sa ténacité de volonté obstinée qui la rendait obtuse à toute tentative pour la raisonner dès lors que ses propres souhaits, ou son propre sens de la justice, étaient concernés.
